It can protect the stuff in the bag from dropping but also makes the bag more rigid than a regular soft bag.it is easier to pack since it holds it shape.This bag has a super easy to zip zipper with a flap to help keep out water.The outside is a rubberized material but not too heavy.
I would think this would keep water out in just about any normal situation.
If you completely submerged it for a long time it would leak but I don't think that is what most people are going to use this bag to do.
The quality of this bag is way better than I expected.
The straps are super comfortable.
