(More customer reviews)After my Topeak Aero Expanding Wedge bag stolen, I went to a local REI store to purchase a similarly sized replacement. During this shopping excursion, I was fortunate enough to stumble across the Detours Bobtail bag, which is larger than the already spacious Topeak offering. Smaller than a rear rack bag (aka trunkbag), the Bobtail is still large enough for an extra layer of lightweight clothing. Despite its relatively high price tag, I have been very happy with my purchase as the bag strikes a balance between lightweight design and carrying capacity.
The uniqueness of the Bobtail stems from an integrated plastic frame that creates a very rigid structure allowing attachment to the seat post with a single large latch. This arrangement enables vastly more rapid removal than undoing two separate Velcro straps required by most bags.Easy removal means that it isless likely to be left on the bike and, hence, less likely to get stolen.
For larger loads, I have a quick release rear rack and matching Topeak trunkbag. That combination is great for all day trips through the countryside.Yet the extra weight and aerodynamic drag are a bit much for hardcore exercise during urban and extra-urban jaunts where food and other necessities are locally available. However, in such situations, the temperature can still change, often requiring an extra layer of clothing. This is where the Bobtail fills an important niche.I am able to put a thin long sleeve shirt (or thin track pants) plus a wallet, mobile phone and keys in this bag.Alternatively, it is possible to put both a thin long sleeve shirt and a very thin pair of pants in this bag at the expense of zipper, which is under great stress when both clothing items are jammed into the bag.In this arrangement, other items such as keys, wallet and phone must be stored elsewhere.
If you are cyclist who wishes not to use a rear rack or backpack, take a closer look at the Detours Bobtail. It is a spacious bag for important items that don't require larger rack-attached bags.Pros
Spacious enough to have a thin long sleeve shirt and very thin track pants
Convenient single clip attachment for fast and easy removal
Internal frame creates a rigid structure that doesn't twist or shake during hard cycling
Cons
Pricey
Easy to steal if left on the bike
